Elected representatives from across the political divide united earlier today to give their support to "National Toe Awareness" day.
Minister for State Tom Parlon was particularly emphatic on the issue.
"Sure don't we all have toes", he said.
"Apart from Pat Rabbitte. That man moves around on felt rollers that plug straight into his legs, no word of a lie. It's so you wouldn't hear him sneaking up behind you. He gave me a savage wedgie earlier on while I was rolling up the trouser legs."
"Anyway, the point we're making is that Irish people should take better care of their toes. You never know when you might need them. Like, maybe if you were kidnapped or something, and you didn't want them taking your fingers."
Fianna Fail's Cecilia Keaveney made a very visual point. "I've dressed in purple to highlight the amount of careless toe-bruising which can happen when you run around the place barefoot and crash into a bedpost or doorframe. While the ensuing hopping and howling can be amusing for others, it is certainly no laughing matter for the digits involved."
